On a rainy grey afternoon AEI (Rugby) RFC travelled to Bedworth for their first away game of the season.
Both teams started the game full of passion however, the wet conditions did not make for expansive Rugby in the backs so both teams tried to keep the ball in tight with the forwards.
AEI (Rugby) RFC scored the first try from a set line out piece which allowed Eric Telford to smash his way through the Bedworth backs and leave at least 5 players sprawling on the floor in his wake. Rob Bollen converted the try with a drop goal as he had forgotten his kicking tee.
AEI (Rugby) RFC then had their Hooker, Steve Brown yellow carded for a cynical foul on the Bedworth Scrum Half and Bedworth made the most of the extra man and scored two quick tries to take in a 10-7 lead at half time.
The 2nd half started the same way with the AEI (Rugby) RFC Pack dominating the scrums but this time they made use of the young agile backs lead by the speed machine Derek Mcculloch
Veteran Prop Deane Mayfield kept securing the ball and managed to make lots of mazy runs for AEI (Rugby) RFC that belies his age and even managed a couple of sidesteps to confuse the Bedworth Backs.
Yet again poor discipline from Bedworth gave AEI (Rugby) RFC a penalty in front of the posts to which Rob Bollen again dropped kicked to make it 10-10 with twenty minutes to go.
Bedworth finally seemed to stir from their slumber and started to make some good runs with their backs and finally this paid off with a quick try that gave them a 15-10 lead with 10 minutes on the clock remaining.
With the minutes slipping by and AEI (Rugby) RFC unable to make the telling pass to score. Bedworth managed to score with the final play of the game.
AEI (Rugby) RFC man of the match was awarded to Kyle Bowden.
AEI (Rugby) RFC will take heart from this performance and they showed plenty of promise for a successful season. Next week AEI (Rugby) RFC play at their home ground, GEC Park, Lower Hillmorton Road against Coventry Welsh II, 15.00 Kick Off.
