Old Leamingtonians Vets v A.E.IIn another titanic forwards clash AEI come through for a resounding victory away from home. AEI threw off their usual problems, with early game nerves, in spectacular fashion when prop-forward Edward Dunlop caught the ball from the kick of and proceeded to smash his way through the pack to score close to the post. Old Leamingtonians came back strong but despite a bruising forward pack they were unable to contain the AEI back line as first Jonathan Jenkins went over followed by Edward Dunlop again. Just before half time hooker Dave “Jade” Williams broke through to run from the half way line only to be bought down a meter short. Showing good strength he was able to stand up and recover the ball to score under the post. AEI finally managed to covert a try giving a half time score of 22 – 0. The second half was a repeat of the first as Jonathan Jenkins crashed over for two more as well as Jim Marney from an open play break. Old Leamingtonians did manage a try under the post from a loose ball however the final score of the game came when Paul Eaton kicked a loose ball forward into open play then with a grace scoop picked the ball up to run under the post, then proceeded to miss his own conversion. Full Time score 46 – 7 with two conversion to Richard “Pinky” Pinks. The Jolly Abbott Man of match title went to Jonathan Jenkins. Captain Peter Pritchard said of the game, “It’s the best result we could have hoped for in our build up to the second round of Warwickshire cup in two weeks time. This was another game that was all about the fitness and speed of the back line players but respect to the forwards who took another battering, ” |
